President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday, called on
Nigerian lawyers to stop manipulating the courts to defeat the course of
justice.
He also advised them not to sacrifice the integrity of
the country’s legal system, in a bid to cover the misdeeds of their clients, no
matter how lucrative the brief may be.
A statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the
President on Media and Publcity, Mr. Garba Shehu, said Buhari made the call at
the opening of the 55th Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar
Association (NBA), in Abuja.
The president also asked lawyers to support his
administration’s war against corruption and help the country return to the path
of rectitude by making Nigerian courts functional and effective again.
The president reminded the lawyers that quick
enforcement of disputes over contractual relationship would encourage investors
to come to Nigeria and advised lawyers to stop using the courts to frustrate
quick dispensation of justice.
