The footage premiered on NBC's Today Show in the US and showed billionaire protagonist Christian Grey - played by Co Down actor Jamie Dornan - picking up a few of his bedroom essentials in a DIY store.
Grey is served by the shop's nervous sales assistant Anastasia Steele - played by Dakota Johnson - as he stocks up on cable ties, masking tape and rope.
The clip ends with college student Steele, who is unaware of her soon-to-be lover's predilection for sadomasochism, joking: "Rope, tape, cable ties, you're the complete serial killer," to which Grey replies: "Not today."
The clip was released after the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) gave the much-anticipated film an 18 certificate and said that the work "passed uncut".
Previous trailers for the movie featured the couple kissing passionately in a lift and a montage of shots involving whips, robes and blindfolds.
The film is directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, who has admitted in an interview to having "fiery arguments" with the novel's author, EL James, about bringing her work to the big screen.
The film-maker admitted that she had "creative differences" with the author, telling Porter magazine: "It was difficult, I'm not going to lie.
"We definitely fought - but they were creative fights and we would resolve them."
She added: "We would have proper on-set barneys, and I'm not confrontational, but it was about finding a way between the two of us, satisfying her vision of what she'd written as well as my need to visualise this person on screen. But, you know, we got there."
Asked whether she is friends with the author now, she hinted that all was not entirely harmonious, saying: "Ummm...."
